ISO 42001 does for AI what ISO 27001 did for security: a certifiable management system for governing it responsibly across its lifecycle.

A management system for AI

ISO 42001, published in 2023, is the first certifiable international standard for an AI Management System (AIMS) — the policies, processes, and controls for developing and using AI responsibly. Just as ISO 27001 provides a system for managing information security, ISO 42001 provides one for managing AI risk and governance across the lifecycle.

Built like ISO 27001

If you know ISO 27001, ISO 42001 will feel familiar: it uses the same harmonised management-system structure — context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, improvement — plus an Annex of AI-specific controls you select based on risk. The management machinery (internal audit, management review, continual improvement) is the same shape.

What is AI-specific

The AI-specific substance is in the controls and processes: AI risk assessment, the AI system lifecycle, data governance for AI, transparency, human oversight, and impact assessment on individuals and society. These are the things general security management does not cover, and they are the reason the standard exists.

Why certify

As AI scrutiny grows — from customers, regulators, and the public — an ISO 42001 certificate is an internationally recognised way to demonstrate responsible AI governance, much as ISO 27001 does for security.
