How much does ISO 42001 cost?

By Sam Rivera, Founder, SentinelPanda · June 20, 2026 · 1 min read · ISO 42001

ISO 42001 costs scale with how much AI you actually govern. A company consuming one AI API is a very different number from one building models.

The same buckets as 27001

ISO 42001, as a harmonised management-system standard, has the same cost structure as ISO 27001: the accredited certification body (initial plus annual surveillance), readiness work and tooling, and internal time. If you have budgeted an ISO 27001, the shape is familiar.

AI footprint is the swing factor

What moves the number most is how much AI you govern: a company that consumes a single third-party AI feature has a small AIMS; one building and operating multiple high-risk models has a large one. Built-in-house, high-risk AI carries the heaviest controls (impact assessment, oversight, lifecycle) and the most internal effort.

Reuse lowers it

An existing ISO 27001 ISMS sharply reduces ISO 42001 cost — the management-system machinery (audits, reviews, risk method) is shared, so you are mostly adding the AI-specific controls and processes. Doing 42001 after 27001 is far cheaper than standalone.

Scope to control it

As always, a focused scope around the AI that matters keeps every line item down. SentinelPanda keeps the AIMS evidence and audit cadence continuous so the internal-time bucket stays small; an accredited body performs the certification.
