Transparency is the control that makes the others possible — you cannot oversee, contest, or trust an AI system you are kept in the dark about.

Why transparency is a control

ISO 42001 treats transparency as a core responsible-AI principle, because so much else depends on it. A person cannot meaningfully oversee a decision they cannot understand, an affected individual cannot contest one they were not told about, and trust is impossible without it. Transparency is the enabling control.

Levels of transparency

It operates at several levels: telling users when they are interacting with an AI system (rather than a human), giving affected individuals appropriate information about automated decisions, and maintaining internal documentation of how systems work for oversight and audit. The depth scales with the stakes.

This aligns with the EU AI Act's transparency obligations — disclosure for certain AI interactions and information requirements for high-risk systems. Building transparency into your AIMS positions you for those obligations too.
