A SOC 2 is an evidence exercise. The teams that suffer are the ones who try to assemble a period's worth of proof in the final week.

What "evidence" means here

For each control, the auditor wants proof it actually ran during the period: not "we have an access review policy" but "here are the quarterly access reviews, performed on these dates, with these results and remediations." Type II is fundamentally about operating effectiveness over time, and evidence is how you demonstrate it.

How sampling works

Auditors rarely examine every instance — they sample. For a control that runs monthly, they might pull a few months; for change management, a selection of tickets across the period. The implication: the evidence must exist consistently across the window, because the auditor chooses which slices to inspect. Gaps in the middle surface as exceptions.

The usual evidence set

• Access: user lists, periodic access reviews, joiner/mover/leaver records, MFA configuration.
• Change: change tickets or pull requests with review and approval, deployment records.
• Operations: monitoring/alerting samples, incident records, backup and restore tests.
• Governance: approved policies with dates, risk assessment, vendor reviews, security training completion.

Continuous beats heroic

The failure mode is treating evidence as an end-of-period project — frantic screenshots, half of them dated the week before fieldwork, which auditors notice and question. Wiring evidence to accrue as the work happens (tickets, logs, review records captured when they occur) turns the audit into exporting what already exists.
